Another Great Back to School Gift Idea

Handmade paper is on of the best tools any artist can have in their tool box.  It can be used in so many ways and for so many different applications.

It's still back to school season around here, so I thought up another great gift for the kids going back to school. 
It's a soft cover journal.

The only items that I used for this project is the Arnold Grummer's Medium Pour Mold and some scrap paper.  I made a quick how to video of how I made this journal, which you will find below.  Also don't forget to check out the Arnold Grummer Design Team Blog for other great projects.

Chigiri-e Japanese torn paper collage

This tutorial will show you how to create a chigiri-e inspired torn paper collage using handmade paper. Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese craft. It is used for stationary, wall hangings, boxes and all kinds of decoration.   Handmade paper is perfect for this technique as the torn edges provide a lot of texture. This is a great time to use the scraps of paper left over from other projects as well as those pieces of paper that have irregularities.   Materials: - Arnold Grummer Medium Pour Handmold Medium Couch Sheets  (You are going to need a lot of these if you want to make the variety of colors you will want for making the variety of colors of paper to choose from that I want.) -Paper for background -Various handmade papers for the design -Embossing stylus (optional) or pencil -Tracing paper (I used Dritz Disappearing Mark-B-Gone Tracing Paper. How to polish paper with a stone

Do you like to read about other handmade paper artisans? Recently I read an article from the Monte Crisco Magazine on Master Papermaker Francesco Proietti and one line really caught my attention. "Finally, a rounded stone “polishes” the paper until it is flat and smooth." Now I'm all about learning things the old fashioned way albeit I might not prefer to do it all the time, I do like my modern ways too, just saying. However I enjoy a respite from the modern world every now and then and this technique just called to me to try. So I got out from my stash a sheet of one of my "perfectly imperfect" hand made papers that I created using the medium Dip Handmold . I wanted a rough sheet of paper to see if this would actually work. I planned on doing a bit of stamping on it so I drew out a grid that I intended to polish.
