Ribbon Book Binding

Image
© Anne Rita Taylor 2016 We had interesting themes when we swapped handmade books online a few years ago. It was always fun seeing what each person made. The books had content, except when we would have a Blank Book Exchange or a How-To Book Binding. The How-To Book Binding theme always received the most participation! We included the paper and instructions. I sent the Ribbon Binding - pretty and an easy book to make. It requires only 4 pages with a cover, plus a good amount of ribbon. Especially good for using leftover hand-made paper scraps. Supplies:  Arnold Grummer Paper Making supplies .  Arnold Grummer Paper Making how-to . Cover: 5 1/2 by 8 inches, folded in half to 4 inches by 5 1/2 inches Paper : 4 pages 5 1/2 by 8 inches, also folded in half - I used stationery with roses on the edges Pretty Hand-made paper: 3 by 4 inches - Paper that I made with flower inclusions Optional paper for framing the handmade paper on the cover: 2 1/2 by 3...

"The Buddha Book”

Image
©Michele Emerson-Roberts 2016 I love journals and handmade books, and I add several new ones to my collection each year! My favorites are handmade books with "content". You may remember the “Knots Prayer” book from my Jan. 1 blog project which was filled with quotes.  This "ribbon bound" journal is one of the easiest books to create and making multiples is a breeze.  Match the quotes to the paper theme. They make marvelous gifts! I often create books a certain size because I have odd size papers etc. I had a stack of long skinny scraps of handmade paper, mat board scraps and some wallpaper pieces that were perfect for the covers. I will list the measurements for my book, but please do not be stuck with this size - make your book whatever size you want. Even though my book is "landscape" oriented, it can also be made "portrait" oriented. Remember if you don’t have handmade paper to use for your book you will need to make as many pages as you...

“The Knot’s Prayer Book”

Image
©Michele Emerson-Roberts 2016 This is one of my all time favorite handmade books. I make a least a dozen a year to give as gifts to loved ones who need something special to remind them that they are loved. I like to use handmade paper for the pages to make them even more special. You can make these any size; mine are 4 ¾ x 6”, only because I had matboard scrap pieces that size - and so that each folded page will be ¼ of a sheet of handmade paper.     Supplies: ·         Any of the Arnold Grummer paper making kits ·         A sunny window, heat gun or microwave oven ·         Blender, small strainer, cello sponges and soft towels ·         Scraps of off white or cream paper (think junk mail, etc.) ·         Spellbinders TM Grand Calabur™ cutting and embossing machine ·  ...

My Moon Book with Tamiko

Image
I love to create books and I don't always have a reason or content to put in them (shrugs).  Sometimes I just create to CREATE. Today I created a moon book.  While on a search for moon related quotes, I said, "I may just use this book to record some of my favorite moon inspired quotes." Here is my today's project. I created my paper first from, using the Arnold Grummer (AG) Papermill Kit.  The papers I recycled were old Christmas wrapping paper in red and white. For this batch I almost doubled my normal loose handful of torn paper bits.  To see how to create your own papers with this kit, you can check out Mr. Grummer's how to process, by  clicking here . Because this book's paper was rather thick, and not your average sheet of handmade paper, the page itself required actual scissors or a blade to shape.  I decided not to support the book with any type of book board. I was able to score my page, to include a spine with a weak paper cutter blade. ...

Books For All Occasions

What is more fun than reading a book?  How about creating one using handmade paper?  This book is perfect to keep your memories or ideas in.  Want a little book for some fun art journaling?  This is the one for you! This book began with the creation of 2 handmade sheets of paper using the Papermill Pro Kit  and the basic papermaking instructions .  The first sheet of paper was done in a solid orange color which then was used for the back of the book.  The second sheet of paper was for the front cover so it needed to have a lot of color.  I used 3 papers pulps which were all created using some leftover construction paper which I poured into the deckle using a ladle in a random pattern.      The first thing I did was to paint both end pieces for the book and laid them aside to dry.     After both sheets were dried,  I  traced the covers from the Make Your Own Book ...

Love Notes

Image
Valentine's Day is almost here so why not make something special for the one you love.  A book covered in handmade paper is a wonderful gift to give to that special someone.  Use it every day to write a message in it to remind the person of the love you share.  The idea for this book was inspired by something I have done for my husband for 24 years now.  Every night I sit down and write him a note and put it in his lunch bag to read a work.  It is a special way for me to tell him about my day, what I'm thinking and how much I love him.  I thought this book was the perfect way to share a little extra note in the day to say, "I love you."  It will sit on the table next to his favorite chair so he can read the new note each night.     I, first, wanted to share with you a picture of the container that I use for placing my papermaking deckle and the water in.  This is a cement mixing tub that I found at the local...
