Kirigami with Handmade Paper

Image
Making kirigami with handmade paper is easy and the results can be elegant or quirky depending on your choices. Whether you are using your handmade paper to make into kirigami or adding kirigami pieces into your handmade paper, the results are beautiful. "So what is kirigami?" you may ask. Kirigami is the combination of folding and cutting paper to make designs. Most of us have made paper snowflakes. That is a form of kirigami. First, you fold the paper and then you cut elements from the folds. Unfolding the piece reveals the pattern. There are two parts to this article: Part One - Making kirigami Part Two - Incorporating kirigami in your handmade paper. Handmade Gift Box

Image
©Anne Rita Taylor 2016 I used to buy small gift boxes until I learned how to make them out of paper and card stock.  They are easy to make and the colors can be coordinated with your gift. The gift here is a   heart-shaped  glass paperweight. Supplies: Arnold Grummer paper making kit For a 3 inch square box and 1 and 1/2 inches deep: Paper used for top of box should be 1/4 inch bigger than card used for the bottom: Top - Hand-made paper, size 8 inches square, follow the link to make paper here . Bottom - Cover stock, 7 3/4 inches square Directions are the same for both Top and Bottom paper and cover stock: • Fold four corners into center. • While corners are folded, fold into thirds, left and right edges to center, both ways. • Cut 4 corners diagonally up to the point where the folds meets that you just made when you folded both ways into thirds. • This is the most important step, so here is another...

Recycling and Upcycling

Image
Handmade paper making involves the benefits of recycling discarded papers into new paper, and it also involves including other materials as well as what I like to call up cycling.  It is a win win situation for the creator and the environment. Hi, I m Ann from AnnMakes (http://annmakes.blogspot.com) and the Design Team here At the Arnold Grummer Paper Making Design Team.  Today I am sharing with you a card that is a recycled and an up cycled project.  The up cycling is the original blue card base that was once made from recycled papers and used in a print shop.  It did not make it to the retail market because of some mis folding mishap.  I still found a use for a batch of these misfit cards, I just trimmed the blue cards back to a regular rectangular and even shape, I don't mind that they are not exactly a commercial measurement.  Then I reused a used dryer sheet that I dyed in some strong left over coffee over night.  No waste here.  The...

Easy Paper Snowflake Photo Background

Image
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is here.  There is still so much to do before Christmas Day.  My last post for this year had to be fairly easy and quick. Using ordinary white copy paper and adding some  Arnold Grummer Iridescent Flakes  to the mix, I made two simple sheets of paper flecked with sparkle. Follow the basic paper making process that can be viewed at this  video link . A different style acrylic frame with a different style of die-cut snowflakes Once the paper sheets were completed I used my "go to" tools - Sizzix Big Shot and dies. The simple snowflake die-cuts were then used to add a unique embellishment to a black & white photo in an acrylic frame. Now shop at the  Arnold Grummer website  for a last minute Christmas gift for that creative someone in your life or yourself. Use the coupon code: MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!!

Tag…You’re It!

Image
©Michele Emerson-Roberts 2014 I love creating small gift items for special friends and family to include with a handmade paper card. These tag necklaces can be made ahead of time and stashed away for later gift giving.  Since I make dozens of sheets of paper at a time and always have scraps, I will often use leftover handmade papers and simply draw around the template and cut the tag shape with scissors. Great way to use up leftover papers and beads too! Supplies: Any of the Arnold Grummer™ paper making kits A sunny window Blender, cello sponges and soft towels Arnold Grummer tag template #360 Personal paper cutter, scissors Scraps of white or ivory paper, scraps of colored paper (think junk mail, etc.) ColorBox ™ Ink pads in various dark colors to match the hand made tags Decretive stamps (patterns for the covers… words would be great for the inside pages) Clear embossing powder Heat tool Standard size round hole punch Four f...

Memory Book

Image
An option for themes this month is a "vacation summer memory book". My idea was to create a small book using various leftover handmade papers that I processed and went unused. This small booklet could be used for snapshots of special summer moments or to layer in hand written notes for remembrance. Each of the pages are different as the photos show: (NOTE: The front cover is made from a sheet similar to page 1 and it's look changes entirely with the wax added.) Page 1-Embedded paper  resin shards Page 2-Texturized sheet Page 3-Recycled scraps Page 4-Colored pulp painted edge Page 5-More recycled scrap papers Page 6-Recycled from scraps Back Cover-Extra thick sheet made from scraps A sheet of handmade paper, with resin covered dictionary pages that are embedded into the sheet, was used for the front cover.  Wanting to make the cover take on a different look, I coated the paper with melted beeswax...
